I leap to my feet before he’s finished and take off running toward the small glade of trees at the end of the lake. Hudson follows me, just as I knew he would.
Come on, I urge as he starts to close the gap between us. Just a little closer. A little closer. A little— I jump to the right at the last second.
Hudson’s momentum carries him forward, right into the lake—which I already discovered, after exploring yesterday afternoon, does not have a shore. Of course, this means Hudson doesn’t just get his legs wet…he immediately sinks beneath the clear lavender water.

Suck It Up,
Buttercup
—Grace—
“What the fuck?” Hudson sputters as he comes up for air and shoves his wet hair off his forehead.
I can barely hear the litany of very colorful curse words leaving his mouth over my own laughter. When Smokey starts yowling at the top of her lungs, too, I can’t stop myself from doubling over in laughter. If I wasn’t already her least-favorite person on the planet, I’m pretty sure I would be after today.
But hey, Hudson deserved that. I may never get the smell of tago milk out of my hair again.
“I told you I was sorry, Grace!” he growls as he reaches the side of the lake with two powerful strokes.
I cross my arms and send him an evil “I told you so” smile. “And I told you there was no sorry, Hudson.”
“Only death. Yeah, I remember.” He sighs loudly. “Apparently, I should have taken you more seriously.”
“Apparently,” I agree. Right before I rub my fingernails against my chest, then blow on them in a total “nailed it” gesture.
“I’m going to get even eventually.”
“I’m sorry.” I put a hand to my ear. “I can’t hear you over all of your whining.”
His brilliant blue eyes narrow to slits. “Payback’s a bitch, Foster. You know that, right?”
“Is it?” I ask innocently. “I hadn’t noticed.”
And then I turn and saunter back to my tree—and the picnic basket full of goodies that’s waiting for me.
Seconds later, there’s a large splash, followed by more screeching from Smokey. Sadly, I don’t even get a bite of my tago cheese sandwich before a dripping wet Hudson Vega is standing over me.
“You’re blocking my sun,” I tell him without bothering to look up.
“Grace.” There’s a note in his voice that has me dropping the act in an instant.
I spring to my feet, terrified that I inadvertently drowned Smokey or something with my prank. But no, she’s right there, wrapped around Hudson’s soaking wet jeans. “What’s wrong?”
“I …” He heaves a giant sigh. “Think I need some help.”
