“I know,” I say and pause, not sure if I should mention the blue string I saw or not. It didn’t sit well with me ever since that I haven’t told her about it, but to be honest, I’ve been scared. What if it didn’t mean what I thought it meant? Worse, what if she didn’t want it to mean what I thought it meant? That possibility slices through my chest like a knife, and it takes me a second to find my breath again. I owe her the truth, though, so I begin with, “But if we make it back, he won’t be your mate anymore.”
“You don’t know that,” she answers like a shot. “He’s not my mate here. But even you said your magic doesn’t work on this side of the divide. So maybe the bond is like that. It can’t reach across whatever barrier is between the two worlds.”
I start to mention how the bond never looked right to me but think better of it. No need to open myself up to being called a liar again.
“What if it’s not?” I ask instead. “What if the bond is gone forever?”
She doesn’t say anything for what feels like an eternity but is probably only about a minute. I hold my breath the whole time. Right up until she says, “I still love him.”
“Do you? Really?” I ask, rolling over to face her. “You knew him for two weeks. Two weeks. We’ve been together more than a year. Just you and me. Do those two weeks really stand up to everything we’ve been through?”
I’ve never been skydiving before, but as I wait for Grace’s answer, I imagine it probably feels exactly like this. I’ve willingly jumped out of a perfectly good plane, and I’m hurtling toward the earth with only a hope and a prayer that a thin string will pull open something magical that will save me. It’s positively terrifying.
“I don’t know,” she whispers.
I swear I hear every bone in my body shatter as I hit the ground. “You don’t want to know.”
“Maybe you’re right. Maybe I don’t.”
Which is all the answer I need.
I roll back to my side of the blanket and tell myself it’s better this way. Better to nip in the bud whatever fucked-up things I’ve been feeling recently. It makes everything easier.
“Good night, Grace,” I tell her softly.
“Good night,” she whispers back.
Never has the three feet between us felt more like a hundred. And in between lays the remnants of a fantasy and a future that never stood a chance.

Live and Let’s Run
—Grace—
Hudson is already out of bed when I wake up.
