But then Orebon and Lumi exchange such a long glance with Caoimhe, it’s clear they’re not even trying to hide that they’re cooking up an idea that somehow includes us. When Orebon nods, Caoimhe gives her mane of hair another impressive toss, and I can’t help trying to swallow the lump that feels permanently lodged in my throat now.

And that’s before Caoimhe’s lips pull into an almost feline smile and she purrs at Hudson, “Perhaps we could make a deal.”

Color Me Purple

—Hudson—

“A deal?” I ask and don’t bother to try to keep the skepticism from my voice. “You want to make a deal with us?”

There are a million reasons why that’s bollocks—including the fact that they just found out about us ten minutes ago. No way did they take one look at us fleeing from an army and decide they want to partner up. No fucking way.

And if they did, I don’t want to be partners with them anyway.

“What kind of deal?” Grace asks, and she looks as wary as I do.

“The kind where we all get what we want,” Caoimhe says. She accompanies the words with an over-the-top seductive smile that I’m guessing works on 9.5 out of 10 men between the ages of two and ninety.

But it’s not going to work on me. I was raised by Delilah Vega and have seen that kind of smile in action more times than I can count. Plus, I’m more of a sucker for an obstinate chin.

“And what exactly do you think we want?” I reply with a scowl at least as impressive as her smile. And I should know—I’ve been practicing it for more than a century.

“Easy.” She spreads her arms so wide, I can’t help wondering if she’s just trying to sell this or if she’s auditioning for the role of a circus barker at the same time. “You want through the gates of Adarie. But we know you can’t just waltz in without an invitation. One you have to apply for with the mayor’s office first to keep crowding at the gates low and safety a top priority.” Damn. No, we didn’t know that. “Immigrating to Adarie is open to everyone…but it takes sixty days for approval. And that seems like it might be more time than you humans have?”

“One human, one vampire,” Grace tells her.

“Nice.” She looks me over, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a little dirty when she was done. “I’m assuming you’re the vampire.”

“He is,” Grace answers, and there’s a bit of a growl in her tone that I’m not expecting. I’m also not expecting her to take two steps closer to me so that our arms are nearly touching. But she does.
