“I don’t know about that.” I pretend to study it. “Looks kind of like a dent to me.”

He glares at me. “Well, it’s not.”

“Whatever you say,” I tell him, struggling to hold back my grin. Fighting with Hudson is better than doing almost anything else with anyone else. “You would know best.”

“I would know best,” he agrees. “Considering it’s on my face.”

“Yeah, but I’m the one looking at that face right now,” I counter. “And you aren’t.”

He opens his mouth to retort, but then he just lets out a loud sigh. “Grace.”

It’s a very stern, serious-sounding “Grace,” so I reply in kind. “Yes, Hudson?”

“Why are you picking a fight with me about my dimple?”

“Honestly?” I shrug. “I have no idea.”

“That’s what I figured.” He sighs again. “Can I go to bed now, then?”

“I suppose,” I answer airily. “As long as you’re not concerned about the dent in your face.”

“Grace.”

“Yes, Hudson?” This time I use my most angelic voice.

“Nothing.” He shakes his head in resignation. “Good night.”

“Good night.” Then, because I can’t help myself, I add, “You should probably sleep on the side that doesn’t have the dent.”

“You should probably quit while you’re ahead,” he shoots back.

He’s right, so I close my eyes, feeling much better about this whole situation. At least until he wraps an arm around my waist and pulls me against his body, little spoon–style.

“Hey, what are you doing?” I ask, though I make absolutely no move to get away. Because even though the stomach flips are back, this feels good. Really good. More, it feels right.

Something Hudson obviously picks up on. “Don’t act like you don’t want to be here.”

“Just for that, I should move.”

He lifts his arm from around my waist. “Go ahead.”

“I would,” I tell him. “But then I’d have to look at that dent again.”

“God forbid.” If his voice got any drier, we’d be able to use it as kindling.

“Tomorrow, I’m going to find water,” I say as I settle back against him.

“Something tells me tomorrow you’re going to do a lot of things.”

He’s not wrong, so I let it go. And finally, finally drift off to sleep.

Tic-Tac-Toe
and No Chill
—Grace—

A loud screeching wakes me from a dream about Coronado Island.

“Hudson!” I sit up in a rush. “What the hell is that?”

“I was about to ask you the same thing.” He jumps up, starts shoving his feet into his shoes. “Where the fuck is that noise coming from?”
