We spend the rest of dinner talking about trivial things—work, which restaurant we should try next, who makes the best cookies in town. And it is soothing. But it feels like we’re missing something important.
I’m still thinking about it an hour later when Lumi says they have to go relieve the babysitter. We say our goodbyes outside an ice-cream parlor, and I walk back to the inn with Hudson.
My palms are so sweaty, I have to rub them against my jeans twice before we get to our room. I keep remembering the incident in the changing room, worried Hudson is going to bring it up once we’re alone. Worried he won’t.
As we walk into the room, I turn and watch him slowly close the door, then face me. He shoves his hands into his pockets, and we both just stand there, staring at each other, unsure what to do next.
But then Hudson says, “I’m wiped. Night, Grace.”
I stay rooted to the spot as he opens a drawer, pulls out his sweatpants, and heads to the bathroom to change.
I’m still standing in the same spot when he opens the bathroom door again and tosses his dirty clothes in the laundry basket. He leans over and drops a quick kiss on my head before continuing to his side of the bed, pulls back the sheets, and climbs in.
Then he rolls over, his back to my side of the bed, and his message couldn’t be clearer if he’d shouted it.
There will be no tree climbing tonight.

of the Bases
—Grace—
“My stack’s bigger than yours.” Hudson’s voice, low and teasing, floats down a library aisle to me.
I don’t bother to look up from the back cover of the book in my hand. “I’m not a guy. That statement doesn’t freak me out—or make me want to fight.”
He laughs, then closes the twenty or so steps between us in an instant.
“You know what freaks me out?” I complain as I pop the book into my to-be-read pile and then reach for another one.
“Me walking?” He lifts a brow.
“You fading when you only have a few steps to walk. Show-off.”
Of course, I’m mature enough to admit to myself that’s not why it bothers me. Every time he fades, I’m reminded of what a strong and fast and powerful and—I swallow—sexy as fuck vampire this boy is.
Which, after two months, is hard enough to ignore as he swaggers in from changing into his sweats in the bathroom before bed every night with no shirt on.
