As I get up to grab a drink—and maybe sample the pumpkin pie Hudson and I made earlier—I can’t help but glance at his journals. I’m four from the end now, but maybe that’s the problem. Maybe the answer to how he changed from the boy who bought a house for his aging tutor to the sociopath everyone warned me against is in the last journal.
Maybe that’s why it’s the last journal.
I grab some water, cut myself a piece of pie, and accept that I’m one hell of a hypocrite as I snag Hudson’s final journal off the shelf.
I don’t know why, but I’m convinced the way to stop the dragon from attacking again is somehow tied to saving Hudson.
Just as I settle myself on the couch and open it, Hudson mutters something indistinguishable in his sleep. I freeze, worried that I’ve woken him up, but seconds later, he rolls over and one of his pillows flops to the ground.
I breathe a sigh of relief. Not that I’m exactly stressed out that he’ll find me—he knows I’ve been reading them all along. Still, something feels different after our argument, or whatever that thing was this afternoon, and for the first time, I feel a little guilty about doing this.
Not guilty enough not to do it, but still. Guilty nonetheless.
I take a bite of pie and surprisingly, it’s not terrible. It’s not great—the crust has a strangely gummy consistency—but the pumpkin tastes good enough that I take a second bite. My mom’s pie is a million times better, but considering what Hudson and I had to work with, I’m going to call it a success.
I take a couple more bites, then shove the plate away. I may be reading Hudson’s journal, but there’s no way I’m getting crumbs in it. Being trapped with him for more than a year has taught me well.
The first three entries aren’t very eventful, but when I turn the page on the fourth, every cell in my body goes on red alert, though I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the deep gouges his pen made in the paper, like he’d forgotten his own strength when he was writing it, or maybe it’s the slashed letters that all but crackle with indignation.
Whatever it is, I brace myself before I start to read.
Well, another day aboveground bites the dust, in the most ignominious manner possible. And to think I used to hope for a time I no longer got shoved in a crypt.
