“You’re the one who invited us here,” Hudson reminds him.

“I did, of course. To thank you for your truly incredible service last night. I’d like to give you something in exchange for your bravery. It was a sight to see. Such generosity is truly heartening.”

“I don’t know about that. I think anyone who could have would have done the same,” I say.

“Well, that’s the thing,” he tells me. “I don’t think that’s necessarily true. Plus, I don’t know that anyone else in Adarie could have done what you did.”

“Kill a dragon?” Hudson asks doubtfully.

“Kill a guardian of the barrier,” the mayor counters.

Time After
Time Dragon
—Grace—

“Are you saying dragons guard the barrier between the realms?” Hudson sounds doubtful. “I’ve never heard that before.”

“Not just dragons. Time dragons,” Souil answers.

“Time dragons?” I think back on everything I’ve learned about the dragons. Including things that didn’t make much sense before. “Is that how they can do that thing where they skip from one place to the next?”

The mayor gives me a proud smile. “It is, yes.”

My heart is pounding in my chest, and I can’t keep the excitement from my voice as I ask, “Can they get us home?”

Souil taps his napkin against his mouth for what feels like forever before he replies, “They can, of a sort, yes.”

“And now we’ve killed one?” Hudson asks. “Which, I assume, is not going to encourage the rest of them to help us?”

“But he was trying to kill us. They both were,” I insist. “They weren’t trying to help us do anything except die.”

“That’s what the guardians do,” Souil explains. “And there aren’t hundreds of them—or even ten of them—if that’s what you’re thinking. Guardians—time dragons—are created when someone tears through the barrier between the realms. One dragon for every rift. Tears in the barrier mess with time itself, which is obviously not acceptable. So the God of Time created guardians to watch over the barrier and repair the rifts immediately.”

“God of Time?” I blurt out because, yeah. God. Of. Time.

The mayor shrugs. “There are all sorts of gods, dear girl. Don’t you know?”

I shake my head. “But why would the dragons come after us?” I ask. “What do we have to do with repairing a rift in time?”

Souil does a kind of back-and-forth thing with his head. “It’s a little more complicated, but essentially, you shouldn’t be here—and they won’t rest until they rid the realm of you.”

“And they get rid of us by—?” Hudson’s eyes narrow like he’s trying to figure out what happens next.

“Killing us,” I whisper.
