“And fuck anybody who tells me differently,” he snarls. “It wasn’t the God of Time’s daughter who was dying. It wasn’t his precious light that was being extinguished from this world. I would have messed with anything—anyone—to save my precious Lorelei. And I would do it again, even after all the time I’ve wasted here.”
“But what about the lives you’ll mess up when you do this?” I ask as I think about the butterfly effect—and every time travel book I’ve ever read. “When you go home, you may save your daughter, but you’re going to hurt millions of innocent, unsuspecting people.”
“My daughter is innocent!” he snaps at me. “And what does it matter if things change for other people? If you never meet your previous mate in your new life, what will you care? You won’t even know she existed, so you won’t know to mourn her.”
“Don’t you mean if our new lives exist? If you do this, there’s no guarantee any of us exist. That I do. Grace or my brother or our friends or any number of people whose lives could be obliterated or changed beyond recognition because you decided you and your daughter are more important than anyone—everyone—else.”
I look at Grace, who is the love of my life. She’s also my mate, the person who was made just for me. I wouldn’t have to know she didn’t exist to miss her. The same goes for her and for anyone else who has had a soul mate in the last thousand years. Anyone else who has ever fallen in love, who has ever had a family or a best friend. It’s inconceivable.
“You can’t do this,” Grace tells him. “Whatever you’ve suffered, whatever Lorelei has suffered, you don’t have the right to bring that suffering on the rest of the world.”
“You don’t understand because you’ve never had a child,” he tells her. “I’ve waited a thousand years for this day. A thousand years for the chance to bring her back, to save her from an excruciating death. And nothing is going to stand in my way. Nothing.” He eyes us like a rabid dog, just waiting until we’re close enough to attack. “When the sun comes up in two days, I’m going to take all this power inside me, the power you gave me when you killed that dragon, and walk across the barrier to home. I would prefer to save this power for that walk—and for what comes next. But get in my way, and I will kill all of you. And there will be nothing you can do to stop me.”
And then—as if to underscore his words about his own power—he snaps his fingers. And completely disappears.
