I remember my mom once telling me one of the reasons she loved my dad was that he put up with her snoring. She was joking, of course, but I get it now. How truly special is it to find someone who just accepts you exactly as you are. Maybe even loves you because of all those little things you try to keep hidden from others.
Which is why I’ve always known, for far longer than I was able to admit, that Hudson is everything I want, everything I need, and more importantly, I accept him exactly as he is, the same way he accepts me.
But in the wake of the shame burning through the heat in my veins, I realize I’ve never said any of this to Hudson.
“Maybe I haven’t been able to,” I tell him with a sigh. “Not really. Not seriously.”
“Maybe not,” he agrees.
But it’s time I change that.
And so, with a deep breath, I stop hinting. Stop trying to get him to read my mind. And tell him exactly how I feel. What I want. What I need.
“I want you, Hudson,” I say and shiver as something predatory moves in his gaze. Something I suddenly want to see how far I can push. “And I need you to take what I’m offering.”
Then I pull my hair behind my shoulder, tilt my head up, and expose my neck to his starving gaze.
And wait for whatever comes next.

—Grace—
It turns out, I don’t have long to wait.
Not when I’m offering myself to a furious, frustrated vampire. And not when that vampire is close enough to see just how desperately I want to give what he so frantically needs to take.
“Grace.” It’s a plea as much as a warning, and I can hear the truth in the tremble of his voice. The truth that’s been escaping me for weeks.
Hudson needs me as much as I need him—he’s just afraid. And I get it. I do. Honestly, I can’t believe I didn’t see it before. I read his journals. I know how his father spent a lifetime giving him things to love, then taking them away.
But that’s the way fear works, doesn’t it? It’s insidious, coming at you from all the dark corners of your soul that you would rather not look at too deeply. But the more you try to ignore it, the deeper it sinks its claws into you. Until you aren’t just afraid. You’re shredded.
Hudson deserves someone willing to step into the darkness with him.
