“So what?” I explode. “Is it really such a shock that I’m not doing fantastic in this bloody sunlight while working all day and then fortifying the town all night? There’s nothing we can do about it until the dragon comes back, so what the fuck good will it do either of us if I whine to you every time I have a fucking headache?”

“It’s not that I need you to tell me every time that you’ve got a headache,” she counters. “Though I honestly don’t know why you wouldn’t. It’s that you’re suffering, and you don’t want to share that with me. You want to pretend that everything is great even though it isn’t.”

“We’ve got enough shit on our plate right now—why do I need to bog it down with more stuff? I don’t want to bother you—”

“You don’t think I want to be bothered,” she shoots back. “It’s not the same thing at all.”

“There’s nothing wrong with not wanting to give you more to handle. You’ve already got so much to deal with—”

“Actually, there is something wrong with it,” Grace interrupts. “We’re partners. Or at least I thought we were.”

I don’t know much, but I know that statement is a giant Grace-size trap, laid out right in front of me with neon lights, and my head and heart hurt too fucking much not to step right in it. “What do you mean ‘thought we were’?”

She huffs and plops her hands on her hips. “Finally. Let’s finally talk about the elephant in the bedroom.”

I throw my arms wide. “By all means, Grace. Tell me exactly what you think is going on here.”

“Nothing. Nothing is going on here!” Her eyebrows slam down in accusation. “And that’s the problem!”

“Grace, my head is killing me.” I run a hand through my hair and repeat my earlier demand. “Just tell me what it is you want me to say, and I’ll say it.”

“I want to know why you’d rather put yourself through this pain”—her hand waves up and down my body—“than feed from me.” She bites her lip and tears instantly well in her eyes, but she lifts her chin and holds my gaze.

“I never said that,” I tell her, and I hate that my voice has suddenly gone shaky.

“That’s the point. You don’t have to say it. Everything you do shouts it loud and clear.” She takes a swipe at her eyes and adds, “And I’m not putting up with it anymore.”
