“If Grace actually manages to convince the gargoyle to release the time dragon, I’m afraid the creature won’t stop at taking care of Souil,” I admit. “I’m afraid she will go after Grace and me, too, because we’re also out of place in this space and time. We created a time rift when we got here and the time dragon feeds on time rifts, from what I understand.” I take a deep breath. “As much as I believe in Grace, we could still lose today. If not to Souil, then to the time dragon.”
Nyaz nods, urges me to continue.
“Grace is my mate because she chose me. I still can’t believe whatever miracle made me the luckiest guy in the world, but before her, I was lost. I was alone and in pain and I can’t ever go back to a time when I do not remember what it feels like to love her with my very soul. And I know if I somehow survive alone…no world will be safe. If I allow the pain of her death to destroy the love in my soul for her—”
I break off, my gaze holding his. “I’m afraid the monster my father spent two hundred years forging in darkness will overtake me. I almost let the darkness take me at my friend Smokey’s death, and only Grace could pull me back from the brink. What happens if she’s go—” I break off because I can’t say it, even to Nyaz. Even in a whisper.
“I understand,” Nyaz says, and for once, it feels like he might. His stoic expression is gone, and in its place is a sympathy I don’t want and don’t have a fucking clue what to do with. But since it comes with his help, I’ll take it.
I’ll take anything that means I have a chance to keep Grace in my heart forever.
“In my opinion, your best bet is a Shadow Promise. Do you know what that is?”
I shake my head.
Nyaz continues. “A Shadow Promise is the strongest of all shadow magic, an unbreakable promise one person makes to another. There’s no going back on it, no undoing it if you suddenly decide you’ve made a mistake. It’s forever.”
“That’s exactly what I want,” I say, and honestly, it is. “I want Grace to know that I will always love her—and I want my soul to remember it.”
“Okay then.” He nods and gestures out the window to the square. “I think you need to ask someone a question, if her little tête-à-tête with that gargoyle ever ends.”

The Story
of Tonight
—Grace—
Hudson comes running up to me in the center of town square. “Oh my God, Grace. Are you okay?” he asks as he slides his hand into mine. “What happened?”
