“Grace.” Hudson calls my name just loudly enough to yank me out of my reverie. It’s not your fault, he mouths to me.

I shake my head. Of course it’s my fault. Who else’s fault could it be? From the very beginning, when we were first together in the lair, Hudson has told me that I’m responsible. He doesn’t get to change his tune now, just because I’m upset by the truth. And by upset, I mean pretty freaking traumatized.

“So what do we do?” Hudson asks Souil.

“There’s only one thing you can do. You have to kill the time dragon when she comes back around in three months. It’s—”

“Three months?” I ask, horrified. “We have to wait three months before she comes back?”

“Well, they only show up when it’s dark, of course. And since it’s only dark for three days every three months in the Shadow Realm…” He throws up his hands in a “what can I do” gesture.

There’s nothing he can do. Nothing any of us can do. But knowing there’s a real possibility of getting home, the idea of having to wait three more months before we can even think about trying to do so…it’s not what I wanted to hear.

Souil clears his throat to pull our attention back to the conversation. When we’re both looking at him, he continues. “You will kill the second dragon, won’t you? You wouldn’t want to hurt anyone else in our benevolent community, now would you?”

His words hit like a punch to the gut, but I lift my chin and offer another option. “We could leave Adarie before the dragon comes back.”

Hudson opens his mouth to say something, probably to volunteer to lure the dragon away from town himself, but Souil blurts out, “Absolutely not.”

Hudson closes his mouth, his eyes narrowing on the mayor, and my gaze bounces between the two of them.

Souil offers a kind smile and reassures us both, “This is your home now. We won’t hear of you leaving.” He motions for Trudgey to refill my champagne flute before adding, “You’ve killed one dragon. You only have one remaining to defeat, and you can live out the rest of your lives in this wonderful place.” His next smile never quite reaches his eyes. “So it’s settled then, yes?”

Hudson steeples his fingers. “We’ll see.”

And I can’t help but wonder if we’re going to have to fight a dragon in three months—or tonight.

“That guy has issues,” I tell Grace the minute we make it off his property and onto the street.
