I fly full-tilt toward them, pushing myself as hard as I possibly can in an effort to get to her before she lights Hudson up. He’s not thinking straight right now, and I don’t know if he’s in any state of mind to take this dragon on alone.

Except he’s not alone, because even before I get there, Caoimhe races out of the night with two giant purple swords.

She tosses one to Hudson, who slows down just enough to catch it on the fly, then barrels straight toward the dragon, who is screaming and clawing at the ground as she continues to shoot fire all around her.

I get there just as Hudson jumps straight into the air, sword arcing over his head. With a cry of pain and rage that equals anything the dragon is screeching out, he brings the sword down on her neck with every ounce of vampire power he has in his body.

The razor-sharp sword slices straight through her tough outer skin, straight through the muscle and bone beneath, until her severed head falls to the ground at his feet.

Blood gushes out of the dragon’s neck, where her head used to be, and soaks the purple ground around her in this strange, radioactive orange dragon blood.

Hudson is standing in it all, swinging his sword with both hands as he hacks away at the dead dragon’s gaping neck wound, over and over and over with sickening thwacks. Like she died too quickly, like there’s nowhere for his anger and pain to go unless she suffers as much as he is.

I reach for him, ease the sword from his clenched hands as he stumbles backward. “It’s okay,” I say softly, and he leans heavily on me. “It’s over. It’s all over.”

He turns to look at me for the first time, and his face is drained of color, his brilliant blue eyes dull and shattered.

“She’s gone,” he chokes out, and I know he’s not talking about the dragon.

“She is,” I whisper back, even as my own heart breaks at the loss. “I’m so, so sorry.”

“Why did she do that?” he rages. “Why did she have to get in the middle of this fight? I put her in that clock tower. I told her to stay put, told her I would come get her when it was all over. Why didn’t she listen? Why didn’t she—”

“Because she loved you,” I say. I want to pull him close, hold him against my heart, but I know he’s not ready for that yet. So I just tell him the truth. “Because she wanted to protect you as much as you ever wanted to protect her.”

He nods, his jaw working, but the devastation in his eyes is as black as ever.
