“I don’t know if I do.” He puts on a serious face. “Maybe you should provide a demonstration, just so I know we’re on the same page.”
“Maybe you should bite me,” I retort without thinking.
Hudson doesn’t clap back at me the way Jaxon did when I made that mistake, but then, he doesn’t have to. The way his eyes linger on my throat says everything.
The air between us turns heavy, loaded, and swallowing becomes a whole lot more difficult.
Hudson’s eyes, dark and haunted—haunting—move slowly along the column of my throat. From the pulse point at the base of my neck to the sensitive spot under my jaw to the very sensitive spot right beneath my ear, he studies them all like he’s going to be quizzed later.
Forget swallowing. Breathing just became more difficult. Nearly impossible, really, which is a problem considering humans need air to breathe. And the way Hudson has me feeling right now—like prey to his very hungry predator—is reminding me just how human I am.
Then he blinks and the moment is gone. In place of the predator is the Hudson who helped me off the floor this morning. The Hudson who let a shadow wrap herself around his neck because it made her happy.
But seeing this Hudson doesn’t make me forget the other one. It just makes me feel more off-balance, more keenly aware that the predator is lurking just beneath the surface. It should terrify me—and maybe it does—but not for the reason I thought it would. No, I tell myself as my heart rate takes its sweet time returning to normal, the reason I’m finding myself afraid to be near Hudson has nothing to do with him killing me.
And everything to do with him devouring me, one tiny piece at a time.

Re-Veg Is Sweet
—Hudson—
Grace is blushing again, her cheeks turning a soft, rosy pink that I’ve grown to like over the last year despite myself. Not just because it means all that gorgeous blood of hers is flowing just a little closer to the surface—though that is quite the nice little side benefit.
But I also like it because it lights her up. Makes her glow.
Not that I give a shit if she glows or not. I’m just saying she looks good when she does.
“Sooo, back to this farmy behavior,” she tells me sternly. But as she speaks, her hand flutters up to her throat, her fingers stroking the exact spots I couldn’t help staring at. And I know that she’s more affected than she wants to let on. More affected, even, than the blush tells me.
