It’s so far removed from what I thought she was going to say that I just stare at her and blink. “Huh?”

She points at the still-dark sky. “We’ve got at least another day before we have to worry about the sun rising. What do you want to do?”

I let out the breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding. Part of me wants to demand we discuss the time dragon and not possibly killing ourselves to go home. But in the end, a chance to spend more time with Grace without yet facing a future without her sounds like a great way to spend the evening.

“We could take advantage of the darkness to wander the shops for a while,” I suggest. “Maybe I could even spend a little of my paycheck on you and Smokey.”

She positively lights up at the suggestion. “That’s a fantastic idea. As long as I get to spend some of my very pathetic paycheck on you.”

“I don’t need—” I break off when she glares at me. And even though the idea of her spending money on me grates when I want to shower her with everything she could ever dream of, I swallow the words and instead say, “That would be great.”

“Excellent!” She rubs her hands together. “Then let’s go do some serious damage!”

As we walk down the street, Grace laughs a little even as she shoots me a strange look.

“What’s so funny?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “I was just thinking that never in a million years would I hear the great vampire prince, Hudson Vega, talking about his paycheck.”

I understand what she’s saying, but it still stings a little. “I’m not afraid to work.”

“Of course you’re not!” she rushes to say. “I saw you on the farm.”

“Exactly. No regular prince would ever let himself get covered with that much tago milk.”

Grace feigns confusion. “And yet you had no trouble sticking me with milking duty the next day?”

“Well, you did get me covered in leeches for it, so I’d say you’re still winning.”

She gives me a superior look. “I haven’t mentioned the leeches once.”

I narrow my eyes in a mock glare. “You haven’t tried to throw them in my face because you know it’s your fault.”

“You’re the one who got me covered in stinky tago milk!” she says primly.

“To which your completely proportional response was to toss me into a lake full of leeches.”

She shrugs. “I didn’t toss you. You…launched yourself. Besides, I liked that shirt, and now it’s ruined forever.”

“More than you like me, apparently.” I roll my eyes at her.

“At the time, maybe.” She reaches over, slips her hand into mine. And nearly makes my bloody heart explode, even before she adds, “Not anymore.”
