“I love you,” I whisper as I press kisses to his cheek, to his jaw, to the sensitive skin of his neck. “I love you, I love you, I love you.”
He nods against my shoulder, but my words don’t seem to make an impression. Not now, when he hurts so badly.
I hate that, almost as much as I hate the fact that there’s nothing we can do. No way that we can fight Souil.
“What’s going to happen?” Caoimhe asks as she brushes her hands across her cheeks. “When he goes across the barrier and changes things that happened hundreds of years ago, what will that mean for us?”
“I don’t know,” I say, shaking my head. “Could be nothing, could be everything. I have no idea if what happens in one realm affects another.”
Caoimhe looks doubtful, but Lumi looks up from Orebon for the first time. “Nothing will happen to us,” he says quietly. “But what about you? You’re not from this realm. Your whole existence is due to your presence in the other realm. What if he changes something that changes something else that changes your whole life—or even if you have a life at all?”

Grin and Grace It
—Hudson—
At first, Lumi’s words don’t register for me. I’m too busy thinking of everything I’ve done wrong in the last year, all the mistakes I’ve made that I shouldn’t have.
I should have insisted Smokey stayed inside our room today.
I knew the dragon was coming. I knew she would be angry and dangerous. I had no business letting Smokey come out, no matter how much she insisted.
I should have figured out what was going on with Souil.
After listening to him try to justify everything he’s done, I can see the sociopathy so clearly. I’ve always been able to see the narcissism—anyone who looks at him can see that—but I didn’t realize how truly selfish he was until tonight.
I should never have agreed to let the troubadours take part in the fight.
I know they wanted to help, but they don’t have any paranormal powers. And Lumi and Orebon are parents. They were sitting ducks out there. First Lumi, who nearly died because I wasn’t prepared for him to be scooped up by the dragon. And then Orebon, who did die because I wasn’t fast enough—and because I didn’t predict what Souil was going to do.
I should have.
I should have been able to prevent all of this.
And now, three people are dead. The woman who tried to save Lumi. Orebon. Smokey. Just like that. Gone in the blink of an eye, and I did nothing to protect them.
Worse, I did nothing to try to save them.
“I love you,” Grace whispers, and I want to ask her why. How.
