Because I see her. Smokey. Standing next to the gazebo, completely frozen except for the fact that she’s screaming her head off. And the dragon is headed straight for her.
My heart slams into my throat, and I lay on a burst of speed. Because that shadow might be difficult as hell for me to live with, but Hudson loves her. And she would do anything for him. Anything save stop screaming, apparently, because that seems to be beyond her right now. And there’s something about the sound that’s pulling the dragon straight to her.
Hudson’s moving so fast he’s practically a blur, and just as the dragon swoops down to grab Smokey, he slides in front of her and snatches the small shadow into his arms. Then he’s gone again, and the dragon is screaming her displeasure to the world.
Whipping around to follow him, she lets out a stream of fire so large, it takes out two food carts in seconds.
“If a dragon’s weapon is fire, shouldn’t we find a way to neutralize that weapon as best we can?” Lumi had said during one of our planning sessions, and I frantically look around for one of the fire extinguishers the mayor had gotten the council to agree to spread around the village, just in case.
I spy one hiding next to a bench about fifty feet from what’s left of the food courts and race for it. Orebon beats me to it. He snatches it up and races to put out the food truck fires before they spread.
Knowing Orebon has the fires taken care of, I turn back toward the square, searching for Hudson. I find him back on top of the clock tower, dropping Smokey on the blanket I’d laid out for the two of us.
Then he’s jumping back down and racing across the square toward me as the dragon takes another turn around the area.
I meet him about fifteen percent of the way because fading is a thing. “I’m sorry!” he says before I even have time to yell at him for not giving me some kind of heads-up. “I couldn’t just let her die.”
“Of course you couldn’t,” I tell him but promise myself that I’ll get to yell at him later for scaring the hell out of me. “What do we do now?”
Before Hudson can even say a word, the dragon lets out a screech that rips through the air like a lightning strike. Right before she pulls in her wings and starts to dive straight toward the troubadours, who are racing down the street leading outside of the square to the gates.
There’s no way they’ll make it.

of the Deal
—Grace—
“What the hell is with this dragon?” Hudson demands. “She’s fucking evil.”
