I narrow my eyes at him as I think back over the time we’ve spent together. Then ask, “When exactly were these terror-filled experiences supposed to have taken place?”

“Anytime I thought I might lose you,” he answers.

“Hudson.” I roll over to face him, cup his face in my hands. And kiss him with all the love and fear I have inside me.

He pulls away almost immediately. “Don’t do that.”

“Don’t do what?”

“Don’t kiss me like you think it’s the last time,” he whispers. And I realize, in shock, that his eyes are wet and my heart cracks. Hudson hasn’t cried since he was a kid, according to his journals. That’s not going to change tonight.

Still, just in case, I press myself up against him. Bat my eyes a little. And say in the most atrocious French accent I can muster up, “Tell me, monsieur. How do you want me to kiss you?”

For a second, he just stares at me like I’ve drunk too much. And then he starts to laugh, exactly as I intended.

When he finally stops, I put the accent back on. “You didn’t answer me, monsieur.”

This time he just shakes his head and says, “Like you mean it, Grace. Kiss me like you mean it.”

It’s the best idea I’ve heard all day. So that’s exactly what I do.

One Surprise
Deserves Another
—Hudson—

Grace, Smokey, and I hit the streets a little under three hours before the sun goes down. We’ll need to head toward the gates soon and the area we’ve decided to confront the dragon—far enough from Adarie to be safe for the townspeople, though the troubadours have offered to meet us there and help fight—but we’ve got time to wander for a bit, appreciate the quiet before the coming storm.

Smokey takes off to explore the second we get outside, which leaves Grace and me walking along the cobblestone streets, wondering what happens next.

“It’s so beautiful,” Grace says as she looks up at all the balconies, with overflowing flower boxes and purple vines crawling along the brick exteriors. As she does, she twirls around slowly so as not to miss anything, and I’m captivated all over again.

Despite the weight of the things hanging over us, here in this moment of early twilight with fairy lights tiptoeing across her skin, she is so incredibly beautiful. Her smile is open and bright. Her eyes are filled with wonder. Even those few little freckles I love so much seem to dance across her cheeks and the bridge of her nose with every move she makes.

And when she reaches for my hand, when she pulls me in for a cuddle and a kiss, I’ve never been more in love with her.
