The mayor laughs at her request, and I’m surprised at how much younger it makes him look. As does the broad smile he shoots her as he waves her off. “Just ask the innkeeper for directions to my house. He’ll be happy to provide them. Good night and sleep well.”

He bows with a little flourish of his hand, and then he’s gone, just slips into the shadows of the night, finally without a sun, with ease.

I turn around to find the innkeeper, Nyaz, staring at us from his spot behind the front desk. “It’s the fancy house across from City Hall,” he says, his face completely blank. “You’ll recognize it by the dead dragon on the front lawn.”

Before either Grace or I can figure out what to say to that, he picks up a book from the desk in front of him and goes back to reading.

“Last one to the room gets the shower second,” Grace says. And then she steps on my foot—hard—before racing for the stairs. In the two seconds it takes me to recover, she’s halfway up the first flight.

I chuckle and head for the stairs. If I fade, I can be in our room before she even reaches our floor, and I’m man enough to admit it might be worth beating her this one time to get to the shower first. Gentlemanly? No. But I have dragon blood in places no one should…

Before I can take off, though, the innkeeper—without looking up from his book—says, “Any woman who saves me from dying in a fiery dragon explosion gets the shower first for life.”

“I wasn’t going to—”

I break off when he harrumphs. And then he turns the page, making it very clear he knew exactly what I’d been about to do.

With a sigh, I walk to the stairs and head up at a very modest pace. How long can one girl spend in the shower anyway?

I Know How to
Hold My Drink
—Hudson—

“Seriously, Grace?” I ask as I pound on the door for the third time in the last fifteen minutes. Smokey—who is sleeping off the trauma of the dragon fight on the little rug by the window—makes a disgruntled noise before settling back down with a loud snore.

In a bid not to wake her, I lower my voice a little before knocking on the door again. “You’ve been in there for more than an hour. How long does it take to wash off a little bit of dragon blood?”
