I do have one awful moment of terror—exactly what kind of animals live in caves in the Shadow Realm anyway? And is one—or more—of them in this cave right now? The odds are good, right? I mean, how many perfectly good mountain caves go uninhabited?
Probably a lot, I tell myself. Tons, really, especially way up here, where it feels like we’re the first people to ever be here. It will be fine.
We need somewhere to hide so that we can actually get some rest. This cave could be perfect. I just need to ignore every scary movie I’ve ever seen and get in there and actually check it out.
It’s easier said than done, but Hudson climbed half a freaking mountain today with sheer will alone. Surely I can crawl inside a little cave without having a total panic attack.
I take a deep breath, let it out slowly. Take another breath and do the same thing. By the time I’m on the third breath, I’m over myself. This needs to be done. I’m going to go inside. That’s all there is to it.

I Know a Prick
When I Smell One
—Grace—
The entrance to the cave is so small that I have to drop down onto my hands and knees to fit through. Ignoring the sting of gravel against my bare palms—and the fact that the opening to the cave is very, very narrow—I pray for the best as I shimmy myself in.
No animals. No animals. Please, God, no scary animals when Hudson’s not even here to benefit from it.
As soon as I make it through the ridiculously small entrance, the cave opens up a lot. Or at least it feels like it does, considering it’s really dark in here and I don’t have a flashlight. I know that it’s tall enough for me to stand without bumping my head against the ceiling, and when I stretch my arms out, I can’t touch walls in any direction.
Plus, it’s about twenty degrees cooler in here than it is outside, and I’d be a fool not to appreciate that. Of course, I’d feel better if I could see the back of the cave, have some idea of what I’m really dealing with here.
I wait a few minutes for my eyes to adjust, listening the whole time for any rustle, growl, or breathing sound that might suggest that something else is in here with me. But after several minutes pass where all I hear is the fast beating of my own heart, I figure it’s okay. That there’s nothing in this place but me.
