He says “human” like it’s the most reverent thing in the world. It’s all I can do not to roll my eyes and tell him where I come from, they’re like a dime every three dozen. But self-censorship is a good thing, or so Grace assures me, so I just smile and say, “Where else would we get the chance to meet three”—I search my memory again for what Richard called the people of Noromar—“wraiths?”

Something flashes in his eyes so quickly that I can almost convince myself I imagined it, but then he’s smiling. “Looks like we’ll all have stories to tell for years to come, hmm?”

Then he’s shooing me up the stairs to the “second door on the right,” but I barely make it to the landing when a loud, terrifying screech fills the air around me.

Don’t Let the
Bedvamps Bite
—Hudson—

“What is that?” I ask, racing back down the stairs to find Arnst looking out the window with a scowl on his face.

“Tiola!” he calls. “You better get out there and take care of that immediately!”

“Take care of what?” I ask. “Do you want me to go with her?”

“Not unless you want to spend the next three hours with a shadow following you around,” he answers. “That’s Smokey. She’s apparently very upset that you haven’t made it back out to see her. Tiola!”

He says the last with a warning edge to his voice that would have made me obey instantly at that age if he were my parent. Then again, by the time Cyrus got upset enough to raise his voice, everyone knew that heads—and more than likely a lot of other body parts, as well—were going to roll.

“I can go,” I tell him, raising my voice to be heard above Smokey’s sudden caterwauling.

“Absolutely not. Tomorrow is soon enough for you to see the likes of that umbra,” Maroly tells me as she joins us downstairs. “Besides, she needs to learn that she can’t carry on like this and get her way.”

I’m not sure how I feel about any creature carrying on this much just because they want to see me, but I can’t leave her to scream in misery instead of at least trying to do something to help her, either. I’ve been left in misery—not screaming, but definitely in misery—more than a few times in my life, and it’s not something I’d wish on anyone.

Before I can decide if I want to say something to Maroly, however, there’s a sudden pounding of feet on the stairs. It’s followed by an “I’ve got her, Mama!” as Tiola runs out the front door, slamming it behind her.
