Plus, I’ve seen—and heard—much weirder things at the Vampire Court through the years. This is nothing.
By tacit agreement, we head to the barn, hoping to find Maroly or Arnst to see what we can do to help, but we’re barely halfway there when Tiola bursts out of the side of the high, grasslike crops we walked through yesterday.
“Come on!” she calls, beckoning wildly. “Hurry up or you’ll miss it.”
She doesn’t say anything else. Just dives back into the field and starts racing away.
Grace and I exchange a look, and then we take off after her. Because really, what else are we going to do?

I’m Oh So
Swan-Yay
—Grace—
I race through the field as fast as I can, arms and legs pumping as I weave between rows of crops and try to keep Hudson and Tiola in my sights.
They’re both moving fast—really fast—which means I’ve got to work extra hard. Not to keep up, because that ship has long since sailed, but just to stay close enough that I can follow them.
And this isn’t even fading speed, I note as we make another twisty turn through the crop rows. This is Hudson keeping up with a little girl with superhuman but not vampire speed, while also glancing back occasionally to make sure he hasn’t lost me, too.
I lay on a final burst of speed, round the corner, and so, so thankfully emerge out of the crop field and into a large clearing.
I realize it’s a meadow at the edge of a lake as I watch Hudson and Tiola finally stop about three hundred yards in front of me. Filled with wildflowers in a dozen different shades of purple and knee-high violet grass, the whole clearing looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Not just because the colors are so different than our world but because everything just looks a little…skewed.
The trees at the edges of the clearing are wide and tall but seem upside down, with their branches growing every direction along the ground and their long purple trunks stretching toward the sky. The boulders near the lake look like rounded-off pyramids—big and heavy on the bottom but narrowing more and more toward the top. Even the nearby creek that feeds into the lake runs differently than at home. It runs up the hill, flowing upstream and into the lake.
It’s weird, really weird, and yet also beautiful in an off-kilter kind of way. I like it, a lot, and judging from the look on Hudson’s face when he turns around to check on me, so does he.
“What are we looking at?” I ask as I jog up to the lake’s edge to meet him and Tiola.
