“So why are we even talking about it, then?” I ask, baffled. “Don’t we not have enough of an uphill battle with this piecrust recipe we’re supposed to pull out of our arses?”

“We do,” she agrees. “We really do.”

But she doesn’t move to do anything. Instead, she just stands next to me, and we both stare at the ingredients.

Eventually, though, I’ve read everything there is to read on every ingredient at least three times. “Soooo. Are we going to do this?”

“Don’t rush me, Vega. I’m just getting warmed up.”

“Okay, then.” I put my hands up in mock surrender. “Far be it from me to rush genius.”

To give her more time, I walk to the fridge and grab a bottle of water.

“I think you mean rush disaster, don’t you?” she comments.

I shrug. “Tomato, to-mah-toe.”

“I think you mean pum-kin or pump-kin.”

“Are you delirious?” I shoot her a faintly aghast look that I don’t mean at all. “I think you should leave the wordplay to me.”

“Fine.” She sticks her tongue out at me. “But when you get bored, don’t come crying to me.”

Then she rolls up her sleeves and dumps a bunch of flour into the bowl in front of her.

A powdery white cloud rises up and chokes us both.

“Well, I give us a ten out of ten so far,” I say when I can finally breathe again. “What’s next?”

“Butter?”

I lift a brow. “Are you asking me or telling me?”

“I have no idea.” She grins at me.

I grab the butter and unwrap it. “Okay, then. Here goes nothing.” I start to throw it in with the flour.

“Wait!” Grace is full-on laughing now, and it’s such a change from how she was on the couch that relief sweeps through me. I have no idea how to make a pie or a piecrust, but I’ll do this forever if it keeps Grace smiling like that. I’m not sure what that says about me—or us—but I’ll have to figure it out later. Pie making is surprisingly arduous work. “We have to cut it into the crust.”

“Am I supposed to have any idea what that means?”

“It means—” She shakes her head as she takes the butter from me. “Never mind. Just watch and learn.”

“From the expert,” I deadpan.

“Of the two of us? Yeah.”

“Good point.” I watch as she cuts up the butter into little squares and then mashes them into the flour with her fingers. “I thought you didn’t know how to do this.”

“Well, I’ve watched my mom a hundred times. But I have no idea if my measurements are right. I figure we’re going to end up with either piecrust or Play-Doh at the end of this, so it’s a win-win either way.”
