“Play-Doh?” I ask warily, not sure if I want to know. The name doesn’t exactly inspire confidence when cooking.

“Don’t worry about it.” She goes to the sink and fills a measuring cup with water, then slowly adds it into the flour/butter mess until it becomes some kind of cohesive ball thing.

“So, is that dough?” I ask, peering into the bowl when she finally stops kneading.

“It’s something,” she answers, poking at the beige-ish lump with a finger. “Whether or not it’s dough, I guess we’ll find out soon enough.”

“Ummm…” I don’t know what to say to that.

“Don’t sound so worried. It’ll be fine. Maybe.” She crosses to the sink to wash up. “Why don’t you start on the filling while I try to find my hands under all this mess?”

“Me?” I try to seem unfazed, but it comes out sounding like a yelp. I clear my throat before trying again. “You want me to make the filling?”

“It was your idea,” she reminds me. “And you did say we were going to make this pie.”

I’ve got no argument for that, so I pick up the tin and read the directions. Then proceed to measure and dump and mix to the best of my ability. Which isn’t much, but enthusiasm has to count for something, right?

Finally, it’s done, and Grace pours the strange-looking glop into the piecrust she arranged in a baking dish. Then she pops the dish into the oven, and we both stand in front of the glass door and stare at our handiwork.

“That’s going to be completely inedible,” I say after a minute.

“Have faith,” she tells me. “It’s supposed to look like that.”

“Are you sure?” I ask, brows raised, as we both start to clean up.

“No. But I think so.” She sighs, then looks at me with serious eyes from where she’s putting away the ingredients. “Thank you.”

“For what?” I ask.

“For this.” She takes a deep, shuddering breath before whispering, “I used to do this with my dad. Every year from the time I was five.”

“I’m sorry,” I tell her stiffly, and I want to pat her on the back or something, like they do in shows. But I’m elbow-deep in pumpkin pie remains, and I’m not sure she wants me to touch her anyway. Just in case, though, I wander over to the sink and wash up.

“It’s okay.” Her sigh sounds watery, which freaks me out more than I want to admit. “You know, when I was five, I lost my first front tooth right before Thanksgiving. It just fell out, but then the other one got knocked out in a bike-riding accident. I looked totally ridiculous.”

“No, you looked adorable,” I say before I can stop myself.
