“Well, let’s find out.” I stand up and hold out a hand. She just looks at it—her gaze darting between my face and my hand—until finally she takes it and lets me pull her up. “You are going to have to let me in the kitchen, however.”
“You’re already off sides,” she answers. “What’s another hour?”
“My sentiments exactly.”
“I want to go on record as saying I think this is going to be an unmitigated disaster,” she tells me as we walk toward the kitchen.
“Who cares?” I answer with a shrug. “There’s just the two of us here. And it’s not like I’ll know if it’s good or not.”
She thinks about that for a second. “Good point.”
“I always make good points. You’re just not usually in the mood to listen to them,” I tell her. “Besides, the pie could be delicious by the time we’re done.”
“Yeah, well, I’m not holding my breath.”
She opens the cupboard and pulls out canned pumpkin, something called evaporated milk that sounds scary as shite, a bunch of spices, some sugar, and some flour. “Maybe that’s a good idea,” I tell her, eyeing the array of ingredients in front of us that I have absolutely no idea what to do with. “You might pass out.”
Grace laughs a little as she crosses to the refrigerator. “What happened to your boundless faith and enthusiasm?”
“Turns out it has bounds.”
That makes her laugh harder, exactly as I intended. “Okay, so what do we do?” I ask.
“We’re in luck. There’s a recipe on the back of the can.” She holds it up after adding a carton of eggs and some butter to the pile of ingredients on the counter.
“Well, that certainly feels like cheating,” I tell her with a sniff, even as I admit to myself that I’m secretly relieved. “I was planning on winging it.”
“Oh, we’ll have plenty of chances to wing it,” she says with a roll of her eyes. “There’s no recipe for piecrust.”
“That does sound like a problem.” I eye the very intimidating bag of flour. “Although, is there any law that says pies actually need crust?”
“Crust is pretty much the defining characteristic of a pie, Hudson.” She shakes her head. “Otherwise, it’s just…fruit.”
“Hmmm.” I pretend to consider her words. “You make a solid point.”
She pulls out a large mixing bowl. “I know I do. Even though pumpkins are technically gourds and not fruit.”
I play her words back in my head a few times. “I don’t even know what that means.”
“It means—” She shakes her head, shoots me a rueful smile. “Never mind. It doesn’t matter to the pie as a whole.”
