“What the fuck are you doing?” I finally manage to gasp out.

This time, the look he gives me is so innocent, it’s amazing a halo isn’t shining right above his head. “I’m practicing my birdcalls.”

“Your what?”

“I’m an amateur ornithologist. Since we’ve been trapped in here for weeks, I haven’t had a chance to go birdwatching, but that’s no reason to neglect my birdcalls.”

“Your birdcalls?” I get up from the couch and put his journal back on the shelf. “There is no way that ridiculously creepy sound is made by a bird.”

“It absolutely is,” he informs me, then makes the strange cackling sound one more time. “The Australian kookaburra, in fact. It’s the largest of the kingfisher birds, even though it only weighs up to about one pound. It has an average life span of fifteen years and takes about twenty to twenty-two days to incubate as an egg.”

He rattles off the facts like they’re right there at the front of his brain—or like he’s making them up. I think it’s the latter, but since I haven’t been able to google anything since we landed here two months ago, I guess I’ll never know.

“That’s…fascinating,” I say in a tone that tells him birds aren’t really my thing. Normally, I’d have a few more caustic things to add, but that last journal entry is still fresh in my mind. And it’s hard to be snarky to someone who obviously suffered so much.

So instead of saying something cutting, I just smile at him and head toward the kitchen. But I only make it a couple of steps before Hudson makes another obnoxious sound—albeit very different than the first one.

This one is an eerie, high-pitched oooooo that has shivers shooting down my spine.

But I’m determined to take the high road here, so I just keep walking. Which Hudson, unfortunately, seems to take as encouragement to keep going.

“Oooooooooooooo. Oooooooooooooo. Oooooooooooo.”

The sound is like fingernails scraping down the wall, but I do my best to ignore it—until somewhere around the fifteenth time he does it.

“Okay, seriously. What kind of bird sounds like that?” I ask, grabbing a Dr Pepper from the fridge. Because if I’m going to have to put up with this for the next who knows how long, it’s going to require something stronger than water.

“It’s the common loon, actually. Some people find its call relaxing.” He does it again. “Oooooooooooo.”

“How nice for them,” I answer as I pull out the fixings for a grilled-cheese sandwich. And count backward from one hundred. Surely he’ll be done with the scary-ass loon sounds by then.
