When we were first trapped here, I constantly looked through the photos of Jaxon on my phone, cried myself to sleep every night, ached to see his face just one more time. Tell him how much I love him one last time. But as the days have turned to weeks, and the weeks to months, I’ve made myself stop.
No more quick looks at my phone to remind myself of his smile.
No more grinning at the memory of a corny knock-knock joke we’d share.
No more imagining his arms wrapped around me as I fall asleep.
Because I know if I don’t let him go, my subconscious might do anything to see Jaxon again, including give in and release Hudson from this prison. And if Hudson then killed Jaxon, I’d never forgive myself.
I would give Jaxon up a thousand times if it meant saving his life.
And no matter what Hudson’s said to the contrary, I still believe that’s exactly why I’ve trapped us here in this prison with a roll of tape stretched down the middle. I still believe I could let us free if he’d give in and at least try to be rehabilitated.
Because the more I read Hudson’s journals, and as much as I’m convinced that both boys got the shit end of the stick in the parent department—Hudson’s stick was used to beat him with it. I’m finding myself feeling a whole lot of sympathy for him. Which is not something I ever thought I’d say—and definitely not something I ever wanted to feel.
But it’s hard not to imagine the little boy with the cut finger, rushing to finish a carved horse in the one day a month he has aboveground, just so his little brother won’t feel as alone as he does. Even harder not to feel bad for him.
And not to wonder when he gave up. When he went from this sweet boy determined to protect his brother to the sociopath who tried to kill him instead.
I know a lot went on in the last hundred and fifty years, and I’ve got dozens of journals to fill in the time. But I still want to know how. I still want to know if it was one defining moment or a lot of little moments.
Not that it matters—the end result is the end result. Except, sitting here, holding this boy’s journal in my hands, it suddenly feels like it matters a whole lot.
I glance down at the latest journal entry. I’m well into what Hudson called his “emo years” now, and I can tell why he advised me to skip them—although not for the reason he implied. Because these are the most heartbreaking stories I’ve ever read. Even the amusing entry titles can’t make me smile anymore.
