I’m not sure what to say to that, considering the sudden bitterness in his voice. I know Jaxon had it rough growing up—and still has it rough. His mother scarred him because she was furious at him for what happened to Hudson. So it stands to reason that he had it even rougher than Hudson did, even if they weren’t raised together.
But looking at Hudson, with his lips pressed together and a faraway look in his eyes, I can’t help reevaluating that opinion. But that only makes my plan more important. I don’t know what happened to Hudson in his childhood, and I can’t change it even if I did know. But I can help him deal with it so he can become a better person.
“Just hear me out,” I tell him, positioning myself in front of him when it looks like he’s going to walk away. “Think about the cookie shop.”
“Believe me, I’ve done nothing but think about that damn shop for the last half an hour.” He shifts slightly, as if it hurts to stand still.
From the way he’s looking slightly green around the gills, I’m guessing imaginary cookies don’t go down for vampires any better than real strawberries do. Note to future Grace: Don’t let Hudson eat anything, even in dreams or memories.
“I’m so sorry if the cookie made you sick,” I tell him softly. “That wasn’t my intention.”
“I’m not sick,” he answers, even as he presses a surreptitious hand to his stomach.
I don’t believe him, obviously, but I’m not about to call him on his lie. Not when I’m in the middle of trying to convince him that my plan will work.
Please, God, let it work.
“Remember how happy you were at the cookie shop, though? And the art gallery? Before you ate the cookie?”
“I don’t have dementia,” he snaps. “I think I can remember an hour ago fairly easily.”
Okay, so that’s obviously a touchy subject, though I don’t know why… “I was just thinking. What if we do that more often?”
“Go to the beach?” he asks sardonically.
“Visit some of my memories together. So you can see what a life filled with love is like.”
“That’s your big plan? Show me happy times and that will somehow set us free?”
“When you say it like that, you make it sound ridiculous.”
He pretends to think about my words for a second. Then says, “Nah. You did that all on your own.”
“Well, I was thinking that, you know, if it really is my subconscious trapping us here… Well, the only reason I’d keep us here instead of going home is to protect Jaxon from you.” The muscle along Hudson’s jawline tightens. “So, umm…maybe if you weren’t a…threat…maybe my subconscious would free us.”
