He nods, then leans a shoulder against the nearest wall. I can’t decide if it’s because he thinks it makes him look cool—which it does, though I’d die a million deaths before I admit that to him—or because dealing with the human is just so exhausting that he needs a way to hold himself up.
“So, what’s this fantastic plan of yours?” he asks with a smirk.
“I never said it was fantastic. I said I thought it might work.”
“Same thing, isn’t it?” he asks. “Or do you just not want to own it?”
God, he is such a jerk. Suddenly I’m not so sure my plan will work after all. I mean, if you want to mold someone into a halfway decent person—and yes, I know I’m setting the bar low, but this is Hudson I’m talking about here—you need some fairly malleable clay to start with.
And right now, with that stupid smirk and closed-off body language, he looks anything but malleable.
Still, it’s worth a shot. Anything if it gets me out of here and back to Jaxon. So I take a deep breath and say, “I’ve been thinking. It’s not all your fault that you’re the way you are.”
That wipes the smirk off his face. Now he’s just staring at me with an inscrutable expression. I look at his eyes for a clue, but they’re blank, too.
I wait for him to say something to clue me in to what he’s thinking, but he doesn’t say a word. And since I really, really can’t stand uncomfortable silences, it only takes a few seconds before I’m babbling.
“I’m just saying, I read that journal entry of yours, and you sounded like a really good kid. So, obviously, something happened between then and now to make you like this.”
“Like this?” he asks quietly.
“You know.” I wave a hand, encompassing him from head to toe. “I think we can both agree you exhibit a whole lot of sociopathic behavior, right?”
He adjusts his shoulder against the wall, crosses one ankle over the other. Raises a brow. “Oh, we can, can we?”
I note the warning in his tone, but I don’t stop. I’ve got to get this out if we have any hope of ever getting out of here. “But that’s just because you’ve had a shit upbringing. Or at least I’m guessing you have if it was anything like Jaxon’s.”
He laughs then, but there’s nothing humorous about the sound. “Well, there’s your first mistake. Believe me, Jaxon and I were brought up very differently.”
