His gaze narrows on mine, but he doesn’t say a word.
I shrug. “We could give it a shot, you know. See what happens.”
And yeah, I get that it sounds ridiculous to think showing him what it is to be loved and happy—helping him feel it—will change the trajectory of his life. But I only read a few pages of his journal yesterday, and it’s obvious his father is a shit person who cares only about himself. Add that to what I know of Jaxon’s mother, and there’s no way this guy ever had a chance. At least these journals make it look like Jaxon got out early. Hudson had to stay there his whole life.
He never had a chance. I want to give him that chance and, in doing so, get us the hell out of here. If my mind is truly a prison, then rehabilitation is exactly what Hudson needs to free us both.
“It could work,” I tell him, and this time he lets me put a hand on his shoulder. “You just need to trust me. It will work.”
For long seconds, he looks from my face to my hand and back again. When he finally speaks, his voice is much milder than it was a few seconds ago. “Just to be clear about what you’re suggesting. You think the way to get us out of here is to trick your subconscious into believing I’m a good person?”
“Not trick it. Obviously, the plan is to make you a better person.”
“Oh, right. Of course.” He looks down at his hands. “Because I’m a shite person right now.”
Alarm bells are going off in the back of my head, a warning that maybe I didn’t handle this as well as I could have. “I didn’t say that, Hudson.”
“Oh, I’m pretty sure you did.” His voice is still calm, but it’s colder than the air in Denali. “And I have to say, I choose to leave it.”
I shake my head. “I don’t know what that means.”
“At the beginning of this conversation, you told me to take it or leave it. And I’m telling you that I’m leaving it.”
He straightens up from his perennial “lean against the wall” stance, and I have a moment to realize just how much taller he is than I am. A shiver works its way down my spine as he steps closer to me. Then he’s snarling, “Fuck the ‘poor little rich boy’ narrative you’ve built around me. Fuck you riding in on a white horse to save me.”
He leans down until our faces are only inches apart and I can see the rage burning in the depths of his eyes. “And fuck your opinion of me. You can keep it and your little tour of Grace’s happy times far the fuck away from me.”
