“Right down to the books on the shelves. Except for the kitchen and the windows, everything in here is exactly the same as in my lair. Except it’s not.”

“What the hell does that mean?” She starts to pace—out of nerves or because she wants to get away from me, I can’t quite tell.

Either way, I don’t try to move with her. The last thing I want to do is get her nervous now that we’re finally talking. The more nervous she is, the longer she’s going to keep us trapped in here, and I’ve been trapped long enough, thank you very much.

My whole fucking life is more than long enough.

So instead of pacing with her, I grab a seat on my very comfortable sofa and let her go. She thinks she’s human—how long could it possibly take her to wind down?

“Well?” she prompts when I don’t rush to answer her question.

“I don’t know what you want me to say. Being here is like being in my lair but with minor changes.” I nod my head toward the bedroom area. “Like, the bedroom is usually on the other side of the room. And what self-respecting vampire would have windows in his lair? Or need a kitchen filled with Pop-Tarts?” I shrug. “Besides, the art is missing from the walls.”

She glances around the room, her eyebrows shooting up. “There doesn’t seem to be a space missing a painting.”

I shrug again. “You seem to have added more bookcases or shelves. I just assumed you couldn’t get it all right.”

She shakes her head. “Then why not guess there was a third party trapping us here? Why jump to it being me doing it all?”

Finally, a question that’s easy to answer. “Because I can read your every thought and memory, Grace, but you can’t read mine.”

She stops, eyes narrowed, and I’m thinking she’s going to come sit down. But nope, she’s off and pacing again, wincing as she does, as if the small act of standing still for ten seconds was actually painful for her.

“So if this is your lair, how did I know to bring us here? I’ve never been here before.” She doesn’t even try to hide the suspicion.

Well, that was quick. Gone is the semi-friendliness of the last few minutes and in its place is the same suspicion she’s been casting my way since we ended up here together. I’d say it’s a record, but that’s not exactly true. She lasted at least thirty seconds longer than Jaxon.

Must be a mate thing—hate all the same people, even if you don’t have a reason to. Just one more fucked-up version of loyalty, if you ask me.

Not that anyone ever has.
