But Grace is obviously channeling her inner Jaxon, because this time when she stops in front of me, the old belligerence is back.
“How would I know what your lair looks like?” she asks again. “If we really are trapped in my head, why does it look like your room?”
It’s a valid question, one I’ve been thinking about myself. But not the way she asked it. No, that was very definitely an accusation, and I am so over those.
Which is why I make sure my voice is dripping sarcasm when I answer. “That’s a great question. When you figure out how to get in touch with your subconscious, you can ask it.”
Two can play this game of cordial impoliteness. When you live at the Vampire Court, you learn it really fucking early.
“I’m just saying it doesn’t make sense.”
“And that’s on me?” I ask, annoyance turning to anger in a blink. “I was minding my own business, blissfully unaware of anything, when all of a sudden all hell breaks loose. One second my ex-girlfriend is exploding on an altar, and the next I’m back to the moment before my plonker of a brother tried to kill me again, except this time, some girl is getting in the middle of the fight. Before I can even realize what’s happening, stop teaching the arse a lesson, that same girl—who is apparently my brother’s mate—kidnaps me and locks me back up in some strange facsimile of my lair, all while treating me like I’m the one with the problem. Excuse me if I don’t have all the fucking answers yet.”
Not bothering to wait and see Grace’s response to anything I just told her, I storm into the kitchen and grab a bottle of water out of the fridge. I drink it down in a couple of long swallows, then dump the bottle in a neatly labeled recycling bin.
Because of course this girl has a recycling bin in whatever strange fever dream she’s got us locked up in. We may kill each other or get eaten by a giant, ugly-ass dragon, but at least we will have fake recycled our fake bottles first.
Makes perfect fucking sense to me.
“You’re right,” she says.
“Excuse me?” I answer at the closest I get to a shout. Because those are the last two words I ever expected to hear come out of her full lips.
Not that I’m paying any attention to her lips. But the sentiment stands.
“I said, you’re right.” She makes a point of enunciating each syllable, because this girl can dish it just as well as she takes it. Maybe even better.
