Not that I blame her. One bite of that oatmeal raisin cookie, and I’m feeling pretty shite myself. The fact that the cookie wasn’t real—and that I didn’t actually eat any of it—doesn’t seem to matter to my queasy stomach.
“I do have a question for you,” Grace says after several awkward seconds. “You knew almost immediately that we were trapped in my head.”
“Is that the question?” I ask with a smirk. Not because I don’t understand what she’s getting at but because it’s fun to rile her up—because she gets all prissy and dictatorial when I do and because she’s really cute when she’s prissy and dictatorial.
Not that it should matter to me how she looks when she’s my brother’s mate, but for some reason, it does. Besides, I’ve spent the last hundred years of my life living down to people’s expectations of me.
I don’t see why I should stop now.
Grace rolls her eyes at me, but she doesn’t jump down my throat. Progress? I wonder. Or is she just biding her time because she needs something from me?
The cynic in me figures it’s the latter, but…we’ll see.
“You knew right away that we were trapped in my head,” she continues.
I lift a brow. “Still not a question.”
“Okay, fine. Here’s the question. How did you know?”
It’s a good question, and one I’ve been waiting for her to ask since I figured it out. But just because I’ve been expecting it doesn’t mean I’ve got an answer for her, because I don’t.
I just knew.
But that’s not going to help us get out of here, so I dig a little deeper. Try to figure out what it is that tipped me off. But the best I can come up with is, “It just didn’t feel real.”
“What didn’t feel real?” Now she looks confused as well as queasy.
I gesture to the room around us. “All of this. It felt a few degrees off.”
“I don’t get it. It feels real to me.” She glances toward the room’s one remaining window. “Especially that dragon.”
“Oh, the dragon’s real,” I assure her. “And so is everything else beyond these walls.”
“Okay, I’m even more confused than when we began this conversation. How can the dragon and outside be real and everything in here be fake?” She throws her hands up in exasperation. “I’ve never even seen this place before, so if I’m imagining it, how could it feel off?”
“Because it’s my lair,” I tell her, then watch in amusement as her eyes go wide.
“Your lair?” she whispers, looking around at everything in here. Especially the ax-throwing station in the center of the room. “Seriously?”
