“Yes, Reaper, I am well aware,” the Pied Piper replies with a sharp, sly smile. “And I am also very bored. Such a game will keep me thoroughly entertained. There is nothing that we Dokkaebi love more than games of fortune. As for the rules…” The Piper tilts his head. “Well. I’ve always been fond of the number fourteen.”
“Fourteen?” I rasp through a dry mouth, unable to understand the connection. My pulse thunders in my ears. I cannot think through my shock. I cannot do anything but sway where I stand.
“Fourteen,” the Pied Piper confirms silkily. “It’s my second favorite number, my first one being, simply, four. But four is far too small a number for my purposes.”
Four. I shiver, suddenly aware of the clamminess coating my skin, the dampness under my arms, the way my heart pounds erratically as it sends wave after wave of nausea through my trembling body.
Four is an unlucky number. It brings bad fortune—at least, that’s what the superstitions say, and the Eastern Continent’s myths have so far proven to be true. I find it fitting that four would be the Pied Piper’s favorite number.
“I could, of course, give you four days.” The emperor slips a hand into the folds of his hanbok, as if looking for something. “But I am nothing if not magnanimous.” A dark grin. “And so you have fourteen days, Reaper, to kill me.” He finds what he is looking for and tosses it toward me. I see only the glitter of a chain until I catch it in my hands, glass and metal cold on my skin.
It is a necklace, a small hourglass connected to the chain. The curving, eight-shaped glass is situated between two obsidian circles, the same material that makes up the elegant pillars on the hourglass’s left and right. Inside, silver sand waits inside the top curve of glass, unmoving.
“Go on,” says the Pied Piper. “Put it on. A fine piece of jewelry, is it not?”
My fingers tremble around the chain, and he laughs ever so softly.
“When the sand trickles out, little thief, your time is up. And if you have failed to kill me by the end of the fourteenth day… Well. I’ll kill you,” the Piper whispers softly. Lethally. “And I can assure you that it will not be pleasant. That tapestry was very important to me.”
“Which is why it was sitting in a dust-covered box in Sunpo.” The words spill out of my mouth before I can clamp my lips shut. My hands are still shaking violently around the necklace I have not donned. This game he offers me—it is impossible to win. Fear and anger have quickened my tongue, and I regret the words as soon as they are spoken.
