“This is not a test of his character. And you will not escape my judgment by pinning blame on him. What I do find interesting, though, is where you were planning to run instead. There is something that you want very much, and it is not here in Gyeulcheon. It is somewhere else entirely, isn’t it?”

Eunbi. I hold my breath.

“I watched you on the street,” the Dokkaebi continues, sending hot humiliation creeping up the sides of my neck. I fight back a flinch at the knowledge that he saw me in those moments when the Thought had me entirely in its grasp. He clucks his tongue twice. “If your tears were any indication, you seem to be in a delicate situation, Reaper.”

I hold his gaze. “You may remedy that delicacy by releasing me from this realm.” And letting me retrieve my sister.

Because if thirty days go by and Kalmin has not been returned…

Eunbi will die. Because of me.

I cannot have more blood on my hands. Cannot have my little sister’s blood on my hands.

Losing Eunbi would shatter me completely. She is all I have.

A brief moment passes as the Pied Piper sets aside his wineglass and laces his fingers. He props them underneath his chin, his expression concerningly contemplative. Finally, he straightens in his seat and narrows his eyes, as if staring at a puzzle he cannot quite complete. “I would like to offer you a bargain, Shin Lina.”

A bargain. Every primal instinct in my body screams for me to run as far away from this Dokkaebi as possible. Yet it is impossible. I’m trapped here, and there is nowhere to go—except forward, toward the Emperor of the Dokkaebi. Steeling myself, I take another step closer to his throne. “Bargains involve promises. Agreements. Honesty. I have to wonder, Pied Piper, how much your word is worth.”

“My word is worth whatever I decide it is worth.” Bastard. I scowl, trembling with unrestrained hatred. “But your situation intrigues me,” he continues. “I am eager to see how it unfolds.”

My breath catches in my throat as I dare to hope. Perhaps there is a way out of this, after all. Perhaps I will escape with Kalmin unscathed, the threat to Eunbi’s life null, perhaps—

“You and your crime lord—if you desire that he return with you—will be granted passage back to Sunpo…if you manage to assassinate the Emperor of Gyeulcheon.”

What in the gods’ names?

The wonderful hope warming my body gutters out, replaced by icy dread. I struggle to push words through my tight jaw. “You’re the Emperor of Gyeulcheon.”
