A cold shiver kisses my sweat-dampened back as the Piper straightens indignantly. Fury radiates from the emperor in powerful waves of unbearable heat that scorch my skin as I curse my foul mouth.
His silver gaze is unforgiving. “Perhaps my absence from your kingdom has helped you forget who I am, as so many of your kind have forgotten the names of the gone gods.”
I hold my chin high, refusing to cower even as fear grips my heart. “I have not forgotten.”
The Pied Piper considers me for a long moment, his scrutiny sharp. I stop breathing altogether as he tilts his head to one side, then another, before finally settling back in his throne with an air of disinterest that now feels…calculated. “Well then.” His mouth is a cruel, crooked line. “Perhaps the fact that I have let your little kingdom live a full life apart from the power I hold over it has made you think that you can let your tongue run quick. But,” the Pied Piper warns, his lips curving into a frigid smile, “it is so very dangerous to forget such things.”
I will my knees not to buckle under the overwhelming strength of his glare. Will my eyes to resist flickering to his flute, Manpasikjeok, only a hairsbreadth away from his ringed fingers.
“You stole from me, Shin Lina. I have not forgotten, nor will I ever. I have some compassion, as you were only under orders, but we all have choices. Orders do not always require obedience. Demands do not always hold dominance over what is right.”
His eyes narrow and he watches me struggle to hold his gaze, watches me struggle not to tremble. There is no amusement on his countenance now, only cold displeasure.
“This bargain is the best deal that you will receive. Take it or don’t. If you kill me, my court will ensure your and your crime lord’s safe return.” He smiles thinly. “It grows so dreadfully boring here. I urge you to take this bargain. If not…” The Piper flashes his teeth, showing sharp white canines. “Well. The result will be the same as if you lose. Do you prefer a beheading? Or perhaps an arrow to the heart? Although in my opinion, a beheading seems rather quicker and much more entertaining. On my part, at least.”
My stomach roils and I take a deep breath, my chest tight. With this offer before me, I suddenly miss the comfort of Asina’s thirty days. For now that time means nothing, and I have been handed fourteen days in their place. Fourteen days to kill the Dokkaebi emperor and save my sister. Fourteen days of cat and mouse…but I will be the cat this time.
