“You ask the oddest questions.” The Dokkaebi raises a brow. “But perhaps it is because you are ill. You look unwell. Quite different from this morning.” He pauses as he delicately sips again at his wine. “You also have a rather large bruise blossoming on your forehead. However did that get there?”
I fight the urge to massage my aching forehead. “If you are going to kill me, I would rather you do it without the small talk.”
“So brash. And much too eager.” He traces the rim of his glass with a slender finger. I watch as it circles around and around. “No, Shin Lina. I do not plan on killing you.”
I blink slowly. “Why have you taken me, if not to kill me?”
The Pied Piper chuckles and leans forward. “Why, you’re the Reaper of Sunpo. Word of your…exploits…has made its way here in the form of whispers that a wrathful spirit has deemed Sunpo’s souls ripe for the reaping. Killing you, little thief, would be an awful waste of talent.”
I struggle to grasp his meaning. All I can manage to think is that I am in Gyeulcheon. Gyeulcheon.
How did this happen? my mind chants. How did this happen, how did this happen, how did this happen, howdidthishappenhowdidthishappenhowdidthishappen…
The Piper cocks his head. “I would like to ask you some questions, Reaper. And I would like, very much, for you to answer them.”
I release a too-shaky breath. Questions—not killing.
Not yet, anyway.
I clench my fingers around the hilt of my dagger. This is too good to be true. Something is wrong. Very, very wrong.
“The scarlet-haired is your boss.”
“That is hardly a question.” I hastily snap my mouth shut as the Piper’s eyes darken to a storm-cloud gray. I bite my lip hard. This is no place for smart-assery. “Konrarnd Kalmin is my boss. Yes.”
His brows furrow slightly. “And yet you despise him.”
I freeze. How does he—?
“You did not fall for my little trick,” he explains, waving a hand aimlessly. His rings flash underneath the light of the chandelier. “Imagine my surprise and disappointment, Shin Lina, when you did not play with me.” The corners of his mouth tilt downward into what is almost a petulant pout.
“You mean fall for your bait.”
“Semantics.” The Pied Piper raises a shoulder in a shrug. “I suspect that you were not planning on coming to retrieve the scarlet-haired. You are not fond of him. And I now suspect that he returns the sentiment.” He runs a hand across his chin in contemplation.
I slowly incline my head in a nod.
The Pied Piper’s expression is inscrutable. “It is he who ordered you to steal my tapestry.”
I nod again, this time fervently. “Yes. Yes, he ordered me to steal it. He desired the jewels, he’s in the Oktarian jewel trade, he’s greedy, he’s—” I’m silenced by a sharp look.
