Shadow creatures aside, the woman waving her arms around before me looks nothing like I expected and yet exactly as I thought she would.
She’s just an average woman in a rich, “I’ve got way more money and power than you” outfit with a murderous look in her eyes as she picks off people she deems less important than herself. Basically, she looks like my mother with giant purple hair.
Been there, and so not interested in a repeat.
I hit her so hard, she goes flying, spinning through the air. And still that’s not enough—not for what she’s done, to Grace and to these people she is supposed to rule. These people who surround her, who call her queen, who do her bidding no matter what.
Because it’s not enough, because I can see the way she’s already gathering her shadow army around her. Before she can finish summoning them, I snatch her out of midair and slam her into the ground hard enough to make it shake. Definitely hard enough to steal the breath from her lungs.
But she’s back up in an instant, and now it seems like every creature she has—every bug or scorpion or beetle or bird—is with her. And they are all focused on the same thing: eliminating me.
I try to run, but the bugs swarm me, crawling up my legs, my stomach, my chest. They bite me a thousand times over, their poison working its way through my muscles into my veins. Burning me like a thousand Shadow Realm suns searing me from the inside out.
The birds dive-bomb me, scratching at my arms, my face, my shoulders. In another world—a normal world—maybe they’d actually help me out and pick the bugs off me. But here, they’re just another way to torture me. Another way to inject the Shadow Queen’s poison—her venom—into me as the time dragon circles overhead.
I hate every second of this, want nothing more than to fade so fast that everything falls off me and I’m free. Free to get the fuck out of this fucked-up place. Free to forget the pain staring me down from all sides. Free to forget everything and everyone but Grace.
But if I do that, if I get the fuck out now, Grace is the one I’ll be leaving in the lurch. She’s the one I’ll be walking away from. And I can’t do that. I won’t do that.
Especially not now, when a third option is forming in the back of my mind, one that none of us thought of before. Not Grace, not Nyaz, not Souil, not me. It’s a long shot—the Hail Mary of Hail Marys, as Grace would probably say.
But it’s something. A light in the tunnel. A second chance for someone who never knew life even provided first chances.
