Another half a minute passes of me being these damn wolves’ chew toy, and I decide I’ve had enough. It’s hard to move as stone—very hard—but I’m going to have to figure out how to make it work. Sunrise is streaking across the sky and we’re down to only minutes before Souil will be able to sneak into a shadow and get the hell out of Adarie—blowing the timeline to hell and back in the process.

With that thought in the front of my mind, I force myself to roll over—much to the shadow wolves’ shock and chagrin. Then, once I’m on my back, I kick with my right leg as hard as I can while punching with my left arm just as hard.

I get one wolf in the leg hard enough that it goes down with a scream, and I get the second wolf right in the nose. It doesn’t go down as easily, though, its mouth clamping down on my stone hard enough that I can feel—and hear—his teeth scraping against my stone.

I figure it’s going to leave a gnarly scar, but that’s the least of my worries right now. I have to get away from this wolf, have to get to Souil before it’s too late.

So I do the only thing I can do in this case. I take a deep breath and turn myself back into my regular gargoyle form. As I do, I try to convince the hand that’s currently being gnawed on to stay stone, but I’m prepared for what will happen if it doesn’t. Or at least, I think I am—right up until I shift and the wolf’s teeth dig straight into my flesh.

Fuck, that hurts! Still, I ignore the pain as best I can as I launch myself straight up and into the air. As I do, I will my hand to turn back to stone, and this time it listens to me, thankfully. Moments later, I’m soaring high, high, high above town square with a shadow wolf still attached to my stone arm.

Not for long this time, though. Because I’ve had enough of this bullshit, and I am done.

Willing my other hand to also turn to stone, I pull it back and hit this wolf as hard as I can in the face.

This time it lets go with a scream, and I watch—without an ounce of guilt—as it plummets straight down.

I move on before it even hits the ground, whirling around to find Souil still time jumping to his left and right, back and forth. And he’s still only moving two or three feet at a time. Maybe, just maybe, that means we’ll get a shot at him when he finally dives for the shadow he needs to ride his way out of here.
