I’m desperate to check on Hudson, on Caoimhe and Lumi, desperate to know that the three of them are okay in the middle of all this madness. But until these damn wolves lose interest in me, I’m totally screwed.
I just hope I’m the only one, because if Hudson is busy with the dragon, and the troubadours are busy with the wolves, I can’t help wondering who—if anyone—has an eye on Souil. And if he’s still deflecting everyone by flashing along the wall with his force field fully intact.
For a second, the biting stops, and I think I might actually be safe. I wait another couple of beats to be sure, then start to sit up—still as stone—to see if they’ve actually forgotten about me. Turns out it’s just a ploy and the second I stick my head up, they attack again.
Only this time, Hudson is here to save me. He grabs one wolf and sends it flying halfway across the square, then takes hold of the second one and does the same thing. I spring up, changing from stone to my regular gargoyle form as I do.
He takes off, fading back across the square to where the dragon is.
“Thank you!” I call after him as I go to take to the air so I can intercept at least one of the wolves if it decides to come back.
But then, just that easily, I’m back on the ground underneath the two wolves again. Only this time, I’m not stone.
I scream as one sinks its teeth into my left calf and the other grabs hold of my arm. I have one moment—two—of excruciating pain, and then I somehow manage to turn to stone again.
I don’t know what happened, don’t know how I could be free one second and then back in the same position three seconds later, even though I know there was no way the wolves attacked me again. They were all the way across the square…until they weren’t.
That’s when it hits me why we’re having so much trouble defeating the shadow creatures. Yes, it’s partly because there are so many of them and so few of us, but it’s also because Souil is turning back time. There’s absolutely no other way those wolves could have been gone and then back again so quickly. Especially since Hudson wasn’t there to rip them off me the second time, even though he’d been standing right over me.
