It knocks the breath out of me, makes it impossible for my paralyzed lungs to draw in oxygen as I tumble down, down, down to the ground. A glance to the side shows not one but two shadow wolves aiming straight for me.
And I’m trapped directly between the two, with no escape in sight.
A glance at the sky tells me we’re running out of time. The mayor is positioned by the wall, force field in place as his shadow-creature guards conjured by the queen swarm the area around him. In minutes, it will be light enough for him to escape if we don’t find a way to stop him. But how can we when the Shadow Queen’s nightmarish familiars—or whatever the hell they are—are all around us, taking us down one by one?
It’s terrifying and demoralizing and I don’t know what to do about it. Don’t know how to make any of the attacks stop long enough for a few of us to actually try to get to the former mayor. And that doesn’t even count the fact that the dragon and Hudson are tearing the clock tower and several other buildings all to hell as they fight each other on the other side of the square.
I want nothing more than to go help him, but dawn is way too close for me to leave the mayor alone. If I get trapped up there with Hudson and the dragon, then there’s no way I’ll be able to get back before the sun rises enough to cast shadows. And if that happens, Souil is gone. Too many other people are out of commission to be able to stop him.
Before I can decide what to do, the choice is taken out of my hands.
One of the shadow wolves lets loose another loud, brutal snarl and I whirl around on it, prepared to do whatever I need to do to survive. But it doesn’t launch itself toward me. Instead, the other one does—the one I was foolish enough to turn my back on even if it was only for a second.
I go down without a fight, but it’s pretty damn hard to fight when you’ve been ambushed from behind. I turn to stone as I hit the ground—the last defense I’ve got—and it turns out, it’s just in time. Because one of the wolves tries to take a giant chunk out of my back while the other goes straight for my jugular.
Both end up screaming when their teeth clench down fast and hard on stone. But that doesn’t stop them from attacking again. And again. And again. And since I’m currently on the ground with them on top of me, stone remains my only defense. Even as people are injured all around me.
