The rest of the townspeople are converging on Souil, and the mayor—always the showman—is putting on one hell of a show for all of them. Anytime someone gets near him, he flashes somewhere else, until everyone catches on and stops trying. Which is, of course, exactly what he wants to have happen as the minute hand on the clock tower ticks inexorably closer to sunrise.
Because if we don’t kill this damn dragon in the next few minutes, he wins. All he needs is one patch of light and he can ride it straight out of here.
Not that I need the clock to tell me that. The fact that shadows are starting to slowly, slowly creep across the grass tells me everything I need to know. They’re faint yet, almost nonexistent, but they’re there. I can see them. More, I can feel them as they skitter across my feet and brush up against my legs, though I don’t know how.
Just then, like the universe decided to give me a brief moment to celebrate, the dragon banks hard left and circles back around—and lays dragon fire in a giant circle around us and Souil, setting grass and trees and various structures ablaze. Bad news is, of course, there’s fucking dragon fire everywhere, but good news—Souil can’t flash to the creeping sunlight now. He’s got to wait for it to come to him.
But the shadows appear to be growing, creeping past the fire somehow, even beyond where the first rays of light are touching the square.
My blood suddenly runs cold as I think of Smokey and all the other shadows that followed Tiola around on the farm. Not shadows at all, now that I think about it. Umbras.
Shape-shifting umbras.
Another shadow brushes against my calf, and it freaks me out enough that I whirl around even as I step closer to Hudson. What if that’s what these shadows are, too? Umbras that can touch you and communicate and wreak havoc, if that’s what they want to do.
Smokey certainly knew how to do all those things, even when she wasn’t trying.
“Something’s wrong,” I tell Hudson as I watch the shadows creep farther and farther into the square.
“No shit,” he snarls, but he’s still focused on what’s going on with Souil.
“No.” I reach out and grab onto his arm. “Not with him. With the umbras.”
“Umbras?” He looks confused, but then he follows my gaze and his eyes widen, too. “Holy fuck. Are those—”
“I think so, yeah.”
And just like that, it’s on, almost as if our recognition of the things brought them to life. Or, at least, activated them from whatever stealth maneuver they’d been pulling up until this point. Because all of a sudden, umbras are everywhere.
