Picking up the sword from where I dropped it, I race toward her as she tries to head back up into the air. She’s fast, but I’m faster, and I manage to slice a couple of feet into her soft underbelly.

This time, her scream is pained as well as furious, and she turns her head back toward me and shoots me with what I’m pretty sure is everything she’s got. I jump out of the way, and Souil—thank the fucking universe—uses his finely honed protection instinct to blink several feet away and races toward the wall around town. As dawn breaks, first light is going to hit right over there.

But Polo the chupacabra is on his arse, determined to bring the time wizard down before he can get there. Plus the dragon is flying straight at them both, flames shooting out of her mouth in all directions. Terrified his personal force field won’t hold up against the flames, I fade straight at them.

The chupacabra jumps at him hard enough to shake his force field and I take over, tackling Souil and rolling with him straight under one of the oversize park benches that dot the area around the used-to-be gazebo. The benches are metal, and that should be enough to deflect the dragon’s flames if she aims for us again—which I have no doubt she’s going to do.

“Thanks for the save,” Souil says in an obnoxious tone, then blinks out of my hold as soon as we come to a stop. I dart after him, but he keeps blinking straight back toward the wall.

The dragon has locked on to him, and I have to wonder yet again what this plonker is doing running around before dawn. Seriously.

We all knew we’d have to keep the mayor out of the path of the dragon fire, but we figured it wasn’t going to be more than a few minutes between the time he’d likely run out of his protected mansion and when the dragon would disappear in the sunlight. But instead, he’s apparently bought his own advertising and thinks he’s invincible, given he’s just running around, cape flying behind him, as he makes my job ten thousand times harder. I should be killing the damn dragon and instead I’m playing bodyguard to this overgrown cockwomble.

Speaking of which, this jumbo jet of a dragon is wicked fast in the air, much faster than she looks like she’d be given her size, and she is closing the distance on Souil much quicker than I’d like.
