Four blinks later and Souil has evaded the sixth guy but—and this is really interesting—no blink is more than three feet in distance, and the first five people who were frozen in time unfreeze.

“Souil can’t keep people frozen if he has to move himself through time and space!” I shout to Grace as I turn to face her and realize the dragon has recovered from having the vampire-shit kicked out of her. She’s coming after me again. Good. She can bring it the fuck on. Because as long as she’s chasing me, she’s not going after Souil.

Which gives the others time to regroup. Grace can come up with another plan to kill the dragon while I keep her attention focused on me. And Souil isn’t going anywhere if we keep the dragon occupied. I glance briefly at the skyline and note the black night is slowly giving way to a deep blue. Fuck. We’ve got less than an hour now to kill this bitch.

With that thought in mind, I run straight at the dragon again. But this time she’s not distracted by anyone else. She knows I’m coming, and she’s more than ready for me.

To prove it, she flies straight at me, and all I can think is fuck, she’s huge. Like really, really huge. I thought the last time dragon was big, but Asuga, as Grace mentioned she was called, is monstrous. Her green scales gleam in the early-morning dusk as she races toward me, red eyes burning with rage. Her mouth is open, her huge teeth on full display as she lets loose with a stream of fire that sizzles across the square.

I jump several feet in the air to avoid it, but she just sends another wave of flames straight at me. And since I’m in the middle of the air, I don’t have a lot of options other than to twist and hope for the best.

She misses once more, but she’s picking up on my tricks, and the next line of flames she sends at me is impossible to avoid. I close my eyes, prepare myself to blink out of the timeline—only to have a very heavy, very stony Grace slam right into me.

We hit the ground hard, with her on top of me and dragon flames coming straight at us. I have one second to roll us away, as the dragon swoops in, before more fire comes barreling toward us.

Two of the wolves jump into the battle then, hitting the dragon from both sides with claws and teeth. She shakes them off with an outraged roar, but they both get a piece of her. Not enough to weaken her but enough to slow her down just a little.

Which is all I need.
