It’s Darkest
Before the Dawn
—Hudson—

The dragon reappears several seconds later—in the sky.

Brilliant. This suddenly just got a whole fuck-ton harder than we’d anticipated. And we never thought it’d be anything but difficult.

“We need to move!” Grace shouts as she takes off running toward the other side of the square. “We can’t let her get to the mayor!”

Like the dragon can smell the time rift stench on Souil, she banks hard and then heads across the square, straight for the mansion like a heat-seeking dragon missile.

“Already on it!” I shout back as I fade straight across the square toward the mayor’s house. Because I cannot let that bloody dragon get to that tosser. Not while we are so close. And not with everything we stand to lose.

But if there’s one thing dear old Dad has taught me, it’s that things can always get worse. And apparently today is no exception. Because I’ve barely gotten to the edge of the square, dodging lines of dragon fire the entire time, before Souil strides into the square in full disco king dress, complete with cape.

And everything else goes straight to hell.

Grace must have seen him before I did because she’s already racing straight for him in complete gargoyle mode. He sees her coming, though, and blinks away, about three feet closer to where the first rays of sunlight will hit, yet clearly staying out of the dragon’s eyeline.

We’ve still got an hour before the sun comes up, though, so I have no idea what Disco Man is doing rushing for the edge of the town square just yet. Nor do I care. Because at this moment, the dragon ditches chasing me and races straight toward Grace instead, coming in low and flame-hot.

Fuck no. I’m prepared for a lot of things tonight—including my own death. The one thing I’m not prepared for is Grace blinking the fuck out of existence. Not on my fucking watch.

I fade to them in an instant, then jump straight at the dragon. I hit her feet-first, knocking her back through the air—just far enough to send her flames spiraling away from Grace and straight through the town’s stage.

The small area catches fire and the wolves race to put it out before it can spread. Everyone else runs toward Souil with swords raised. We never told them they couldn’t try to kill him—except with dragon fire—so they must decide he just needs to die now. Too bad they don’t know what we’ve seen… He’s not going to be that easy to take down.

He tosses one look at them and blinks several feet away, then flips his hand in the air like he’s spinning a record, and five of the six people chasing him freeze instantly. Interesting.
