“He’s got her set up with friends. He said he wants to fight.” Nyaz adds the last like that’s all there is to it. And maybe it is. I know if something happened to Hudson and I had the chance to stand against the man who killed him, there’d be no way I could walk away from that. No way I could just stay home and let someone else take him on.

We burst out into the lobby, and I nearly plow straight into Gillie, the baker I worked with for a day when I first got to Adarie. She gives me a discreet thumbs-up. Thank God. The first step of the plan Hudson and Nyaz came up with is in place.

The entire first floor of the inn is filled with people from the village. Gillie and a man I’m pretty sure is her husband. Tinyati and her husband and their two adult daughters. Hudson’s principal and her wife. Two of the librarians. The chupacabra. Some of the wolves who live outside the village but shop and visit here often. Even Arnst and Maroly are here, though Arnst isn’t even from the village. Tiola is nowhere in sight, thank goodness.

They head straight toward us, smiles on their faces, and we rush over to meet them halfway.

“Grace! Hudson!” Arnst grabs me and pulls me into a giant bear hug. “We’re so glad to find you safely in one piece. We’ve both had more than a few sleepless nights worrying about you since you left our farm. When Nyaz hinted what was coming the other day, we came immediately.”

“We’ve worried about you, too,” I tell them as I move to give Maroly a hug.

“How’s Tiola?” Hudson asks after he exchanges a hearty handshake and back slapping with Arnst. “We miss her.”

“She misses you guys, too,” Maroly comments. “But she’s good. Still collecting every stray umbra that comes her way.” There’s a question in Maroly’s eyes, one I really don’t want to answer right now. At least, not in front of Hudson, who carries the guilt of Smokey’s death like a bruise that won’t heal.

Thankfully, Caoimhe and Lumi pick this moment to join us. Caoimhe is red-eyed yet clear, but Lumi is a different story. He’s a mess—not only his puffy eyes and face from the obvious crying but the dark circles under his eyes and the lank, lackluster hair.

Combined with the exhausted body language and air of sadness that radiates from him, I’m terrified to let him go into battle with us. It’s not that I don’t trust him, but the last thing I want is to have him make a mistake that leaves his daughter without either of her fathers.
