“But you don’t need to make me an unbreakable promise, Hudson,” I assure him as I look down into the earnest blue eyes of this proud vampire prince kneeling before me. “It’s enough that you love me today, and that I have faith you will love me tomorrow.”

He reaches up, pushes a lock of curls behind my ear. “The promise is as much for me as a gift to you.” He squeezes my hand. “I don’t know much about love, Grace. But you’ve taught me that real love isn’t about finding someone who makes you happy. It’s about finding your own happiness and then sharing that with the person you love. You will always be my light out of the darkness, but not because it’s your job to make me happy. Because you light the path I can follow to find my own happiness. And I want to always see that path, let it lead me back to you. Always.”

With a shaky hand, he flips open the box, and my already fast-beating heart goes completely out of control. Because the ring he got me is beautiful—the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. It’s a simple band made of a delicate silvery-purple metal with beautiful small symbols etched around the band.

It’s gorgeous and perfect and I couldn’t have picked out anything I would have liked more than this.

“Oh my God,” I whisper as he slowly takes the ring out of the box.

“If you’ll have me, Grace,” he tells me, and for the first time I realize how vulnerable he looks, with his hair all disheveled from his nervous fingers and his face pale with worry. I love that he’s resolute in his decision, wish he understood just how resolute I am, too.

“Always,” I tell him with a watery laugh. Then I reach for his hand, bring his palm to my lips. “I love you, Hudson. I’ll always want you.”

He smiles, the first real smile I’ve seen since he walked in the room.

Then he slides the ring up my finger, leans forward to whisper in my ear. “‘I love you with a love that shall not die, until the sun grows cold and the stars grow old.’”

The moment he finishes speaking, my finger tingles everywhere the ring is touching and it tightens for a second, like it’s settling into place. Then it’s done and warmth spreads from my hand to Hudson’s as I reach for him and kiss him with all the love and joy and determination burning within me.

Hudson Vega is my mate, and I will fight for him with every ounce of strength I have in my body and my soul. Because he deserves someone to fight for him. He deserves someone to want him.
