It takes a lot for me to open up to someone—perks of being the child of an absolute sociopath—but right now I don’t have a choice. Not if I’m going to have a chance to take care of Grace, of what we’ve become to each other.

So while Nyaz continues to watch me, I finally say what I’ve been wanting to say for hours. “How does shadow magic work?”

Nyaz’s eyes narrow suspiciously. “What do you want to know? And why?”

“My tutor mentioned it to me once, many years ago. He said it was one of the oldest forms of magic—that it’s so old, it comes from the time before time, in the first light of creation. And because of this, it’s also some of the strongest, most unbreakable magic in the universe.”

“Shadow magic is a lot of things,” Nyaz counters. “Ancient, yes. Powerful, yes. Unbreakable? Almost always.” Now he puts the book down and just watches me carefully. “Are you sure that’s what you want? Something that no other magic can undo?”

“That’s exactly what I want, actually.”

It’s Nyaz’s turn to glance out the window at Grace, which tells me I’m not as smooth as I think I am. Then again, when it comes to her, I’ve never had a chance at smooth. From the minute we met, she’s turned everything about my life upside down.

Thank God.

She hasn’t just broken my walls. She’s taken a sledgehammer to them and shattered them into a million tiny pieces. There’s a small part of me that wants to gather a few of those pieces, to hide them and hold them so that if something goes wrong in the next forty-eight hours, I won’t be completely and utterly destroyed. But the rest of me knows that isn’t possible. It’s already way too late for me to hold back a few pieces, too late to bury them deep and hope Grace doesn’t somehow rip my heart out of my chest.

She already has, and her smile, her touch, her love, are the only things that keep it beating, even now. The truth is, there’s no use holding on to a few pieces of myself, because without her, they don’t matter anyway.

“What are you looking to use shadow magic for?” Nyaz asks when I don’t say anything more. “Because it holds up to almost everything, but I’m not sure it will actually hold up to a time dragon. They are created by the God of Time himself, and I truly don’t know if magic—even shadow magic—can stand against them.”

That’s what I was afraid he’d say, but it’s still the best chance I’ve got. Especially here, in the Shadow Realm itself.
