Maybe it shouldn’t warm me that he asks if I’m okay before he asks about the single most important thing we all need to know. But it does warm me. Because it’s becoming more and more apparent that Hudson will always put me first—above everything.

“She’s going to try to help us,” I tell him, then wait for him and Nyaz to congratulate me, pat me on the back, give me a high-five…something. But they both just stare at me like I’ve come back from the dead.

“Grace…I was worried sick.” I’ve never heard Hudson sound so frantic, and it makes my heart pound. “You were frozen so long, I was sure something had gone wrong in there.”

My high from winning over Artelya fades away as his words register. “H-How long was I gone?” I ask. Because to me, it was a handful of minutes, max.

Hudson’s eyes meet mine. “A full day, Grace.”

I mull on this as the three of us head back inside the inn, Hudson and Nyaz both checking me over for injuries like a couple of mother hens. Could time pass differently when I’m frozen? And if so, what does that mean for Artelya, who’s been frozen for hundreds of years?

By the time we’re sitting back in Nyaz’s office, I’ve shared the entire story of what Artelya and I talked about. Everything except that last bit. I save that to discuss with Hudson privately after all of this is over because yeah, I have no idea how I feel about being anyone’s queen, much less a gargoyle queen.

Once I finish with the update, the general consensus is it’s the best we can count on. We’ll secure the dragon with ropes, I’ll signal Artelya to release Asuga, and we’ll kill the beast as quickly and humanely as possible. And then we will pray like hell that Artelya is right and the time magic finds Souil’s sorry ass and stops him as well.

And that the Shadow Queen doesn’t show up to slaughter us all right in the middle of it.

Easy freaking peasy.

It’s a Hail Mary pass, but then, we always knew it would be. Now we just have to wait and see if it works.

After saying goodbye to Nyaz, whose main job for the next handful of hours is to recruit backup to help if the Shadow Queen attacks—or if the dragon kills us before Souil—Hudson and I make our way up to our room for what may be the last time.

It’s a terrifying thought. And a sad one. Especially since we thought when we left here, it would be to move into a cute little house somewhere near the park and his school, so that we could really start our life together. And now…now, who knows what’s going to happen?
