“Are you sure? It’s really been that long?”

She turns to look across a field where a giant dragon—and by giant I mean makes the last one we killed look like its kid sister—is chained to the ground and resting, thankfully. Her massive green head is lying across a long, spikey tail curved around her semi-truck-size body. She pulls in powerful deep breaths through flared nostrils that bend the grass with every exhale.

Before I can answer, Artelya sighs, closes her eyes as though she’s concentrating really hard on something, then eventually murmurs to herself, “Well, fuck. I thought when I fortified with the dragon I might be stuck with her forever, but I didn’t expect this.”

“Forever’s a long time.”

“Yeah, it is.” She sighs again, then turns back to me with a calculating look in her eyes. “But you didn’t come over here to talk about ancient history, did you?”

“Actually, I did. We have a big problem, and I was hoping you and the time dragon there could help.”

“That time dragon?” Artelya laughs, nodding toward the beast. “Asuga isn’t exactly what I’d call the helpful type.”

“Asuga’s her name?” I repeat. “That’s really pretty.”

“Yeah, it is. Too bad ‘pretty’ doesn’t properly encompass her…personality, shall we say?”

“Yeah, I’ve found that time dragons aren’t exactly the nicest.”

She snorts, then props her sword across her shoulder. “That’s a delicate way of saying they’re arseholes, isn’t it?”

I laugh, because she’s absolutely nothing like I expected. But I like her a lot anyway.

“Well, this dragon is the worst of the lot—especially after being chained up with me all this time. She’s been having to fight her nature, and I’m sad to say she’s gone a bit rabid. Even if she were feeling helpful, she’s nothing but instinct and hunger at this point. It’s why I have to keep her chained up.”

We’re both staring at the great beast, and I can’t help a quiver of sadness fluttering in my chest for the animal. She didn’t ask to be here any more than we did.

“So,” Artelya prompts as a cold wind kicks up. “You’ve got a problem only a time dragon can help solve?”

“Yeah.” I sigh. “But I really wish I didn’t.”

She raises one brow. “Since you’re here—and by here, I mean Noromar—I’m going to go out on a limb and ask if the problem has anything to do with a man named Souil?”
